KINGSTON, Jamaica — A notable reduction in serious criminal activity in St Thomas Eastern has drawn commendation from the area’s Member of Parliament, Dr Michelle Charles. Addressing the House of Representatives during the State of the Constituency Debate, Dr Charles revealed that major crimes across her constituency have fallen significantly this year compared to 2023.
According to the data shared by the MP, a total of 46 major crimes have been recorded across the Morant Bay, Port Morant, Golden Grove, and Bath police areas thus far. This marks a substantial decrease from the 74 major incidents documented during the same period last year, amounting to a 38 per cent overall decline.
Breaking down the numbers, the constituency saw three murders up to December 8, compared to seven recorded for the corresponding timeframe a year earlier. Break-in incidents have also diminished, dropping from 26 to 20.
Dr Charles attributed the improved security landscape to the tireless efforts and strategic policing initiatives of the local law enforcement agencies. “As our region advances, we are witnessing a reassuring downward trend in crime and violence,” she said. “The dedication and sacrifice of our police force have been truly invaluable in making our communities safer.”
