Crisis at Half Way Tree: Former Firefighter Rescued in Public Drama

A high-stakes rescue unfolded on Monday at the Half Way Tree Transport Centre when a former firefighter threatened to take his own life. Thirty-five-year-old Shadane Gentles, a resident of St. Catherine, is now under medical care at the Kingston Public Hospital following the intervention of mental health professionals and his former colleagues from the Jamaica Fire Brigade.

Gentles ascended the St. Andrew landmark shortly after 3 p.m., sparking a tense situation that drew police, firefighters, and a crowd of onlookers. Keith Blake, General Manager of the Transport Centre, explained the swift chain of events that likely saved Gentles’ life.

“Once we saw him up there, we immediately contacted the police, who in turn called the fire brigade,” Blake recounted. “The fire brigade recognised him as a former member of their team. They contacted his family, and with the help of his father and wife, they convinced him to come down. It was a relief that no life was lost.”

The emotionally charged scene reached its climax when two of Gentles’ former colleagues climbed to his position to engage him in conversation. Their efforts, combined with the presence of his family, ultimately persuaded Gentles to descend. Onlookers erupted in applause as the situation concluded safely.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from personal issues, though specific details remain unclear. Observers at the scene expressed gratitude for the intervention by the fire brigade and police.

This marks the second notable event of its kind at the Half Way Tree Transport Centre. In March 2023, suspended firefighter Sergeant Leo Bennett climbed the same structure in a one-man protest advocating for improved working conditions within the Jamaica Fire Brigade.

Gentles’ rescue serves as a reminder of the importance of community support and mental health intervention in moments of crisis. Authorities urge individuals experiencing distress to seek professional help before resorting to drastic actions.
