Edwards is to return to court on June 24 for a case management hearing.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Concerns over possible coercion emerged in court Tuesday as an elderly man facing multiple ganja-related charges appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

The man, identified as Van Edwards, is charged with possession, dealing, and using premises for the sale of ganja. During the hearing, presiding Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell expressed concern after Edwards accepted responsibility for nine pounds of marijuana reportedly found at a property he claimed was occupied by his daughter and others at the time of his arrest.

When asked why he wanted legal representation, Edwards candidly replied, “To beg for me,” prompting a brief adjournment for consultation with an attorney. He later returned and requested legal aid.

Judge Burrell raised a red flag about the circumstances, stating she was “bothered” by Edwards’ explanation, suggesting the possibility that he may have been pressured into shielding others from prosecution.

A case management hearing is now scheduled for June 24, where the matter will be further assessed, including whether Edwards’ acceptance of guilt was voluntary or influenced by familial pressure.
