Dancehall Icons Bring Holiday Hope with New Homes for Hurricane-Affected Families

Two local families recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Melissa will receive a much-needed boost this Christmas, thanks to a generous gesture from international dancehall group Tribe Of Kings (T.O.K).

The homes, prefabricated structures designed for quick assembly, were purchased through MVP Imports Limited using funds raised during the group’s successful Japan tour in late November. The tour was facilitated with support from Jamaica Festival (JAMAFES), highlighting the country’s growing international cultural reach.

Craig “Craigy T” Thompson, a member of T.O.K, spoke about the motivation behind the initiative: “We wanted to give people more than just a temporary solution. A home is where your life happens—it’s stability, safety, and a foundation to build from. Helping someone reclaim that is the most meaningful gift we can give.”

Prefabricated homes, or prefabs, are built in controlled factory conditions and then transported to their final location, allowing for faster construction and consistent quality. The modular approach means that these houses can be delivered and made ready for occupancy in a fraction of the time compared to traditional building methods.

The group will select the families for the gift through community referrals and recommendations, taking care to ensure that the foundations and structural requirements for the homes are fully prepared. “We want to make sure these homes stand strong for years to come. Giving is one thing, but giving responsibly is another,” Craigy T added.

Reflecting on the challenges of 2025, he said, “This year tested us all, but it also reminded us of our resilience. No matter what we face, Jamaica endures. We take pride in lifting others as we rise ourselves.”

As the holidays approach, the group plans to spend quality time with loved ones before resuming their busy schedule of studio work and tours. “Christmas is about family and togetherness. After a year like this, those bonds are more important than ever. Then it’s back to work in 2026,” he said.

T.O.K’s gesture serves as a reminder that even in the wake of natural disasters, community, music, and generosity can combine to restore hope and stability.
