Mullings Redefines Jamaican Discus Legacy With Record-Breaking Throw

Jamaican discus thrower Ralford Mullings has rewritten the national record books with a stunning 72.01m performance at the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, USA.

The 22-year-old, representing the University of Oklahoma, eclipsed the long-standing Jamaican men’s discus record of 70.78m, set by Fedrick Dacres in 2019. The throw also erased Mullings’ previous lifetime best of 69.67m, achieved last season at the same venue.

This new mark does more than just secure bragging rights on home soil. Mullings has now risen to fifth in the world on the World Athletics rankings, while simultaneously etching his name into the history books as the eighth-best discus thrower of all time.

Adding to the drama of the competition, Olympic champion Roje Stona produced a career-best effort of 70.17m for second place, surpassing his previous mark of 70.00m thrown in Paris last year.

Mullings’ record-smashing form comes at a critical moment as he prepares for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month. With this trajectory, Jamaica — traditionally dominant in sprinting — now appears ready to carve out global recognition in field events, signaling a new era for the island’s athletics program.
