Antiguan Authorities Sound Alarm Over Fraudulent Fundraising Linked to Tragic Child Murder

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Authorities in Antigua and Barbuda are urging citizens to stay alert to a growing scam exploiting the tragic death of nine-year-old Chantel Crump.

Police issued a public advisory warning that certain individuals are falsely soliciting donations under the guise of supporting causes connected to the late child. Officials confirmed that these fraudulent appeals are being made in the name of non-existent charities and fake community initiatives.

The government had previously announced it would fully fund Chantel’s funeral arrangements, stressing that no additional public donations are necessary. Religious leaders and civic groups across the nation have denounced the child’s killing, labeling it a devastating and senseless act.

Law enforcement noted that while many legitimate organizations serve critical roles within communities, criminals are increasingly taking advantage of public sympathy to line their own pockets. They emphasized that such schemes not only deceive well-meaning donors but also undermine trust in genuine charitable efforts.

Police reminded the public that obtaining money or goods through false pretences constitutes a criminal offence. They warned that individuals caught participating in such activities will face serious legal consequences.

Meanwhile, Angela Mejia, a 20-year-old woman, has been formally charged with Chantel Crump’s murder. She remains in custody following her appearance before a magistrate earlier this month.
