British Nationals Caught Smuggling Cocaine at NMIA in Major Drug Bust

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican authorities made a significant drug bust at Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, intercepting two British nationals attempting to smuggle millions worth of cocaine out of the country.

According to law enforcement officials, the suspects—a man and a woman whose identities have not been disclosed—were apprehended by the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) during routine security checks before boarding a British Airways flight to London.

The operation, which took place around 4:25 p.m., began when officers noticed suspicious behavior from one of the travelers. Upon further inspection, authorities discovered approximately seven kilograms (15 pounds) of cocaine hidden in the lining of two suitcases. Shortly after, a second traveler raised similar suspicions, leading to the discovery of an additional 7.2 kilograms (16 pounds) of cocaine stashed in her luggage.

The illicit cargo carries an estimated street value of £454,400 (J$92.7 million), making it one of the more substantial drug seizures at NMIA in recent months.

Both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, with law enforcement working to determine whether they are linked to a larger smuggling network.
