News outlets aired footage of intense flames near the busy commercial district, where multiple buildings and vehicles were threatened by the blaze.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the incident on social media, stating, “We are providing every available resource to assist in the response to the small private plane crash in Northeast Philly. More information will be shared as it becomes available.” The post came amid widespread concern over potential casualties, though exact figures remained unconfirmed.
Local broadcaster FOX29, citing high-ranking police officials, reported that six people were aboard the downed plane. However, these numbers had yet to be verified by other sources, and Philadelphia authorities had not issued an official statement by late afternoon.
Residents were urged to keep clear of the area as first responders worked to secure roads near Cottman Avenue and Bustleton Avenue, just across from the Roosevelt Mall. The catastrophe occurred only two days after a separate aviation tragedy off Washington’s Reagan National Airport, where a commercial jet collided with a military helicopter, resulting in 67 deaths. That event marked the most lethal aviation accident in the United States in nearly 25 years, adding to the tense atmosphere surrounding this new crash.
