Prominent Government Officials Decry Murder of Former Gleaner Journalist

A wave of shock and sorrow has rippled through Jamaica’s media and political spheres following the violent death of veteran journalist Barbara Gayle. Authorities say Gayle, a respected former reporter for The Gleaner, was discovered with fatal injuries at her residence in Caymanas Country Club Estate, St. Catherine, on Tuesday morning.

Among those condemning the attack is Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, who lamented that such a brutal act reflects a disturbing pattern of violence that continues to plague the nation. Minister Grange expressed deep grief over the loss and urged swift action to locate and prosecute those involved.

“The entire country is reeling from the impact of this senseless crime,” Minister Grange stated, noting that Gayle’s work as a journalist had long contributed to public understanding and accountability. “We must not rest until those responsible are held to account, and we must continue pushing to create a safer environment for everyone.”

Similarly, Minister of Education, Skills, Youth, and Information, the Honourable Dana Morris Dixon, voiced profound dismay, calling Gayle’s killing a painful reminder of the vulnerability faced by individuals who dedicate their lives to truth-seeking and informing the public. Minister Morris Dixon offered sincere condolences to Gayle’s relatives, friends, and former colleagues, describing her passing as a tragic blow to the media community and to Jamaican society at large.

“This tragedy underscores our responsibility to protect all citizens, including the journalists who help shine a light on the issues affecting our people,” Minister Morris Dixon said. “We must work together to confront the challenges of violence and to ensure that justice is served.”

The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth, and Information also emphasized its solidarity with media professionals, recognizing the importance of a free and secure press for strengthening democratic values. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to efforts that safeguard journalists and uphold the critical role they play in delivering accurate, unbiased information to the public.

As investigators focus on bringing closure to the case, these impassioned appeals from prominent leaders reflect a collective desire for answers, justice, and meaningful change.
