WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — In an effort to enhance public safety and foster trust within the community, a large-scale law enforcement operation dubbed Operation Reassurance was carried out across Westmoreland. The initiative aimed to reassure residents that the police are committed to reducing crime and ensuring peace, especially with the holiday season approaching.
Among the successes of the operation was the capture of several individuals, including four wanted suspects. Nicholas Muthra of Benta district, Withorn, was arrested in Hartford after being linked to the November 10, 2024, murder of Iwayne Bennett, known as ‘Mad Dog,’ in Bastard Cedar Walk. The other wanted individuals have been connected to various offenses, with the police continuing their search for more.
The operation also targeted criminal activity in other forms. Two individuals of interest, hailing from the Corporate Area, were detained, and authorities uncovered lottery scam paraphernalia. Those arrested in connection with the scams now face charges, while another suspect was apprehended for marijuana trafficking.
Superintendent Othneil Dobson, the Commanding Officer for Westmoreland, stressed the importance of community involvement in combating crime. “We are urging the public to collaborate with us,” he stated. “These individuals, if left free, will only continue to spread crime in our communities. We cannot do it alone, and we need your help.”
A team of 124 officers, including personnel from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), the Area One Fugitive Apprehension Team, Highway Patrols, and the Transport Authority, conducted the operation. Key areas of focus included Morgans Bridge, Frome, Whithorn, Savanna-la-Mar, and Negril—regions known for their higher crime rates.
As the festive season approaches, Superintendent Dobson also took the opportunity to remind residents of their responsibilities. “We ask everyone to ensure they are carrying the correct documents for their vehicles and that motorcyclists are wearing helmets,” he urged. “Together, we can make this holiday season a safe one for all.”
Operation Reassurance is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement’s presence in Westmoreland and reassure residents that their safety remains a top priority.
