Nickayla Jarrett: Trelawny’s Rising Star Shines Bright as JN Foundation PEP Scholar

TRELAWNY, Jamaica—At just 12 years old, Nickayla Jarrett has already achieved what many could only dream of—becoming the JN Foundation PEP scholar for the parish of Trelawny. Her remarkable accomplishment has not only brought her family immense pride but also set the stage for her to chase even bigger dreams.

“I never imagined I’d achieve something like this, and now that I have, it feels surreal,” Nickayla shared, reflecting on the moment she received the news of her scholarship. “My whole family was so happy and proud; I’m the first one in our family to get a scholarship like this.”

The daughter of Alecia Morgan-Jarrett, Nickayla’s success is a reflection of her hard work and determination. Described by her mother as “responsible, reliable, and full of passion,” Nickayla’s stellar Primary Exit Profile (PEP) score of 374.9 out of 400 earned her the prestigious scholarship.

“Nickayla has always been a dedicated and focused young lady, and I was never surprised when she was selected,” Alecia said proudly. “Her discipline and commitment to her goals make her a standout.”

While many kids her age may not yet know what they want to do with their lives, Nickayla has already set her sights on a future in fashion. Her dream is to attend the New York School of Design, where she hopes to hone her craft and eventually become a successful fashion designer and franchise owner.

“I want to design clothes and open my own franchise one day. I know it’s a big goal, but I’m determined to make it happen,” Nickayla said with conviction.

In addition to her academic achievements, Nickayla is known for her love of math and problem-solving, traits that her former teacher, Shannon Anglin, fondly remembers. “Nickayla was always a curious and driven student. She tackled challenges head-on with humility and a strong will to succeed,” Anglin shared.

Nickayla’s journey has been about more than just excelling in the classroom. Throughout her years at Hague Primary and Infant School, she balanced her academic commitments with active participation in extracurricular activities. From dancing in the children’s choir to being involved in the Schools’ Challenge Quiz team, Mathematics Club, Girl Guides, and 4-H Club, Nickayla made sure to stay engaged in all aspects of school life.

Now a student at Westwood High School, she continues to maintain a busy schedule, joining the News Society and Debate Club while keeping her academic performance top-notch.

“I believe it’s important to have a balance between studying, extracurriculars, and spending time with friends,” Nickayla said. “That’s how I stay grounded and focused on my goals.”

Grateful for the JN Foundation scholarship, Nickayla sees it as more than just a financial boost—it’s a life-changing opportunity. “This scholarship helps ease some of the financial burdens on my mom, and it lets me focus more on my schoolwork and activities without worrying about money,” she explained.

Nickayla’s support network is also crucial to her success. She credits her grandfather, Aspinel Jarrett, for always being there for her and her brother after school. “He’s always around to help, and I appreciate that so much,” she said.

She is also deeply thankful to her teachers at Hague Primary, particularly Ms. Anglin, whose guidance helped shape her academic path. Nickayla also gives thanks to her spiritual family at Duncan’s New Testament Church of God, where prayers and support have played an important role in her journey.

Above all, Nickayla is thankful to God for His guidance. “I know that God has always been watching over me, and I’m truly grateful for His protection.”

The JN Foundation PEP scholarship recognizes young individuals who demonstrate not only academic excellence but also leadership potential and a commitment to personal growth—qualities Nickayla has shown in abundance. Since 1983, the Jamaica National Group has been helping students like Nickayla reach their full potential, paving the way for their success in both secondary and tertiary education.

With her determination, passion, and family support, Nickayla Jarrett is truly a rising star—and she’s just getting started.
