The accused, Omar Malcolm, hails from the Lewisburg district in St. Mary. The victim, identified as Desrine Malcolm from Cane Heap, Richmond, was discovered after local residents noticed smoke rising from the structure and alerted the authorities around 9:30 AM.
Firefighters responded promptly to the scene, battling the flames and ultimately managing to extinguish the fire. Once the blaze was under control, emergency personnel found the remains of the elderly woman amidst the wreckage. The area was cordoned off for investigation, and her body was later transported to the morgue for an autopsy.
On October 14, 2024, authorities apprehended Malcolm, who was subsequently charged on October 23 following a formal interrogation with his legal representation present.
