Flash Flood Alert Issued as Tropical Wave Hits Southern Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica— Residents in low-lying and flood-prone regions of southern Jamaica are being urged to remain vigilant as a flash flood watch has been activated due to heavy rainfall associated with a tropical wave affecting the area.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica announced the alert on Wednesday afternoon, specifically targeting the parishes of St. Thomas, Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth, and Westmoreland.

This flash flood watch will remain in effect until 5:00 PM on Thursday.

The meteorological agency explained that the tropical wave, currently positioned to the west of Jamaica, is interacting with a low-pressure system over the southwestern Caribbean. This combination is expected to generate frequent showers and thunderstorms across most parishes, with a heightened impact in southern regions.

The unstable weather conditions are anticipated to persist from Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning, according to the Met Service.

In addition, fishers and marine operators, particularly on the southern coast, are advised to take extra precautions as sea conditions may worsen, accompanied by showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
