India Confirms Isolated Mpox Case, Rules Out New Strain

India has confirmed an isolated case of mpox, but officials clarified that it is not linked to the newly detected strain that has prompted a global health emergency. According to the country’s health ministry, the case involves the Clade 2 strain, not the Clade 1b strain currently causing concern in parts of Africa and beyond.

The World Health Organization (WHO) raised its highest alert level on August 14 due to the resurgence of mpox and the emergence of the Clade 1b strain, which was first identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Despite these developments, India has reassured its population that no cases involving the new strain have been recorded within its borders.

The mpox case in question involves an individual who recently returned to India from a country experiencing ongoing mpox transmission. Upon their return, they were placed in isolation as a precaution. Following laboratory tests, the health ministry confirmed the presence of the West African Clade 2 variant of the virus.

“This case is an isolated case and is not part of the current public health emergency reported by the WHO, which concerns Clade 1b,” the ministry stated.

The individual is currently under care at a designated isolation facility, with authorities conducting contact tracing and monitoring efforts to ensure containment. Indian health officials emphasized that there is no indication of widespread public risk at this time.

The Clade 1b strain, which has raised global concern, was first detected in eastern DRC in 2023 and has since spread to nearby countries, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. These nations had not previously reported cases of mpox. The new strain has also been recorded in parts of Asia and Europe, further intensifying international vigilance.

For now, India’s health ministry remains focused on ensuring the mpox case remains isolated, with stringent measures in place to prevent any potential spread.
