Jamaicans Abroad Gather in Florida to Witness Election Day

LAUDERHILL, Florida — As voters across Jamaica head to the polls on Wednesday, September 3, members of the diaspora in South Florida will unite for a special election watch gathering in Lauderhill.

Hosted at Donna’s Caribbean Restaurant on North University Drive, the watch party will bring together approximately 200 attendees for live coverage of Jamaica’s general election. The broadcast will be carried through CVM TV’s feed, allowing Jamaicans abroad to follow developments in real time alongside friends and community members.

The initiative comes under the leadership of Lauderhill Mayor Denise Grant and Broward County Commissioner Alexandra Davis. Both officials have emphasized that the gathering is not about political endorsements but about celebrating the democratic process from abroad.

“This moment matters to us because Jamaica’s story is also our story,” said Grant. “We remain tied to the nation’s progress, and by coming together here, we show that distance does not weaken those ties. Our community stands as proof of Jamaica’s enduring spirit and unity.”

Commissioner Davis echoed the sentiment, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event. “This is a space where everyone, regardless of political leaning, can share the experience of democracy in motion,” she explained. “The focus is on respect, togetherness, and our collective identity as Jamaicans.”

Florida resident Michelle Yamaguchi will serve as co-host, while coordination comes from Jamaica’s Contractor’s Marketing. Production support will be provided by Top Notch Productions, ensuring the event is streamed seamlessly.

For many in Lauderhill and surrounding cities, the watch party represents more than just election coverage—it is a chance to reconnect with cultural roots, engage in civic dialogue, and stand in solidarity with loved ones back home during one of the nation’s most pivotal days.
