In a meaningful show of solidarity, the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) has disbursed nearly $120 million (US$740,000) in grants to 54 Jamaican recipients — a timely injection of support as many local initiatives navigate persistent resource gaps.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, April 8, reinforces AFJ’s longstanding reputation as one of Jamaica’s most consistent international allies. Founded in 1982, the non-profit has mobilized close to $3 billion (US$20 million) over the past four decades, directing vital funding to causes that might otherwise fall outside the reach of government programmes or private sector interventions.
This year’s grants cut across a diverse spectrum of needs, spanning education, environmental conservation, health care, arts, homelessness, skills training, music, sports, peace-building initiatives, and gender-based violence prevention, among others.
Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, who addressed the gathering, emphasized the critical importance of partnerships like these.
“Jamaica’s development journey requires not just internal effort but the consistent support of committed partners,” she said. “AFJ has proven, time and time again, that they are here for the long haul — investing not just in projects, but in the future of our people.”
President of AFJ, Ms Wendy Hart, also reiterated the organization’s commitment to deep, purposeful engagement, noting the strategic need to prioritize initiatives with sustainable impact.
“In a world where needs are endless and resources limited, we must ensure our investments are thoughtful, impactful, and aligned with the long-term upliftment of Jamaica,” Hart explained.
The AFJ has also made a mark in recognizing outstanding contributors to Jamaica’s development, with their annual awards honouring individuals and organisations that demonstrate exceptional humanitarian or international achievement.
The power of philanthropy, particularly in a climate of global economic uncertainty, cannot be overstated. With each scholarship awarded, clinic refurbished, or youth programme expanded, the AFJ strengthens the country’s foundation — proving that genuine friendship can be measured not just in words, but in action.
As Jamaica continues its path towards self-sustained growth, having steadfast partners like the AFJ reminds us that while the journey may be long, we do not walk it alone.
