Sandals Foundation Brings Color and Inclusion to Ocho Rios Primary School with New Mural

OCHO RIOS, Jamaica — The Special Education Unit at Ocho Rios Primary School has undergone a transformation thanks to the Sandals Foundation, which has unveiled a vibrant mural promoting the values of inclusion, understanding, and kindness.

As part of its ongoing partnership with the school, the Sandals Foundation initiated the mural project to create an atmosphere of acceptance and celebration of diversity. The new artwork replaces a previous mural and features symbols and messages aimed at encouraging students to embrace differences.

Lyndsay Isaacs, the Regional Public Relations Manager for Sandals Ochi Beach Resort, shared that the project was a collaborative effort involving 56 volunteers from the resort’s team. They worked together to bring the school’s vision to life, which included imagery representing love, understanding, and support for children who may be different.

One of the key features of the mural is the depiction of an elephant symbolizing autism, designed to communicate the message that being different is perfectly fine. Isaacs emphasized that the mural is a reminder for children that despite any differences, they all deserve to be included and respected.

Natalie Johnson, the Acting Principal of Ocho Rios Primary School, expressed her deep gratitude for the initiative. She highlighted the ongoing support from the Sandals Foundation, which regularly brings educators from around the world to interact with the students and engage in various educational activities.

“The mural is not just art; it’s a symbol of our commitment to inclusion,” Johnson explained. “The students love it, and it has brought a positive, welcoming energy to our school.”

This mural is just one of many efforts by the Sandals Foundation to enrich the lives of children and foster a community built on compassion and inclusivity.
