A Newcomer’s First Champs Experience: A Family’s Journey to the ISSA/GraceKennedy Athletics Championships

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Adeyemi Wheeler, alongside his girlfriend Annastasia Scott and their one-year-old son Amir Wheeler, took in the electric atmosphere of the 115th ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

Annastasia, a proud Jamaican and former student of St Andrew High School for Girls, fondly recalled her time as a youth athlete competing for Jamaica. She shared with Observer Online that the 2013 edition of Champs was the last time she attended the event, making this year’s return particularly special.

For Adeyemi, it was a memorable first experience at the iconic event. Though it wasn’t his first trip to Jamaica, it marked his inaugural Champs attendance. He couldn’t pass up the chance to witness the renowned spectacle in person, curious to see what all the excitement was about.

“I’ve heard so much about it from Annastasia, especially back when we were in college,” Adeyemi shared. “She would be glued to the screen, cheering so loudly during the events that we got a noise complaint from our dorm. I had to see it for myself!”
