Historic Election in Curaçao Draws Praise from Caricom Observers

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – A three-member delegation from the Caribbean Community (Caricom) has concluded its preliminary review of Curaçao’s recent general elections, describing the process as peaceful, orderly, and a clear expression of the people’s will.

The observation team was dispatched at the request of Dr. Richeline C. Joe, President of Curaçao’s Supreme Election Council, who earlier this year invited Caricom to witness the electoral process firsthand. Responding to the invitation, Caricom Secretary-General dispatched a small but focused technical mission to assess the conduct of the March 21 polls.

In its initial findings released over the weekend, the Caricom Election Observation Mission (CEOM) confirmed that the election was executed without major disruptions and in accordance with established electoral procedures. The observers noted that all critical phases — from the opening of polling stations to the final vote count — were carried out transparently and efficiently.

“The electoral process was smooth and adhered to the legal framework established by the authorities in Curaçao,” the mission stated, emphasizing that no significant irregularities were observed throughout the day.

The elections delivered a historic outcome, as the Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK) claimed 55% of the popular vote, securing an unprecedented absolute majority. This marks the first time in Curaçao’s political history that a single party will govern independently without coalition support.

Caricom’s observation team is now working on a detailed final report, which will be submitted to the Caricom Secretary-General. The document is expected to include recommendations aimed at further strengthening electoral transparency and efficiency in future elections.

The successful conduct of the polls and the presence of regional observers underscore the importance of democratic collaboration across the Caribbean and affirm the region’s commitment to electoral integrity.
