Bridging Technology and Tradition: Minister Morris Dixon Calls for a Balanced Future

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The integration of technology in education must be paired with strong national values to ensure Jamaica’s sustainable progress, according to Minister of Education, Skills, Youth, and Information, Senator Dana Morris Dixon.

Addressing students and educators at Excelsior High School during the Jamaica Day celebration on Friday, Minister Morris Dixon stressed the importance of a dual approach—harnessing innovation while instilling core values. She noted that while advancements in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) are crucial, they must be underpinned by ethical leadership and national pride.

“We cannot embrace the future without ensuring that our young people understand the importance of integrity, discipline, and respect,” she stated. “Our nation’s growth depends not just on technological skills but on the strength of character we cultivate in our students.”

The minister highlighted ongoing initiatives to modernize the country’s educational infrastructure, including enhancements to school laboratories and increased accessibility to STEAM programs through the HEART/NSTA Trust.

Additionally, she reinforced the government’s commitment to digital transformation in schools, with a particular focus on internet accessibility. “Ensuring every school is connected is a top priority because the technologies of tomorrow—like artificial intelligence—will only be effective if our schools are equipped with the necessary digital infrastructure,” she explained.

Beyond technology, Minister Morris Dixon emphasized the government’s dedication to instilling a sense of national identity and civic responsibility among students. She pointed to the reintroduction of civics in the curriculum as a crucial step in ensuring that young Jamaicans remain connected to their heritage while preparing for the future.

“We must never forget the legacy of those who built this nation. Our students need to understand where we are coming from so they can confidently shape where we are going,” she said.

Encouraging the wider society to lead by example, she called on Jamaicans to actively contribute to shaping the country’s future by demonstrating good character and fostering a culture of excellence.

Jamaica Day was observed under the theme “Celebrating Jamaica: STEAMing Towards the Future, Honing Good Character,” reflecting the nation’s ongoing efforts to balance technological progress with cultural preservation.
