The Digital Mirage: AI ‘Girlfriend’ Cons Shanghai Man Out of $28,000

SHANGHAI, China – What seemed like a heartfelt long-distance romance turned out to be nothing more than a high-tech illusion, costing a Shanghai man nearly US$28,000 in a scam that signals a new frontier in online fraud.

The victim, identified as Mr. Liu, believed he had found love with a woman named “Ms. Jiao.” They chatted daily, exchanged photos, and even shared video calls. But what Liu didn’t know was that his girlfriend was nothing more than a hyper-realistic AI creation, carefully designed to deceive him.

A Perfectly Engineered Illusion

Authorities say a well-coordinated fraud network used cutting-edge artificial intelligence to generate lifelike videos, photos, and documents, making “Ms. Jiao” appear entirely real. Every detail—her facial expressions, voice messages, and even supposed medical records—was part of an elaborate ruse.

Over time, Liu was persuaded to send multiple payments totaling 200,000 yuan (approximately US$28,000) to help his online partner with a new business venture and medical expenses. By the time he realized something was off, the scammers had vanished, leaving behind nothing but a series of AI-generated illusions.

AI’s Dark Side: The Future of Deception?

Experts warn that fraudsters are weaponizing AI at an alarming rate, making scams harder to detect. AI-powered tools can now generate real-time deepfake videos, mimic human speech, and create entirely fake personas with astonishing accuracy.

Earlier this month, Meta issued a global warning about AI-driven romance scams, urging internet users to scrutinize online relationships that progress too quickly—especially when money gets involved.

As artificial intelligence blurs the line between reality and fabrication, this case serves as a stark reminder: the future of fraud is here, and it’s more convincing than ever.
