Jamaica Tightens Border Security with Major Tech Overhaul

KINGSTON, Jamaica – In a decisive move to curb the influx of illegal firearms and contraband, the Jamaican government has unveiled an aggressive border security strategy, featuring state-of-the-art cargo scanning systems at all major ports of entry.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the initiative during a National Security Council Seminar, underscoring the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in border protection.

“We are making the necessary investments to ensure that every container, every shipment, is thoroughly scanned. Jamaica must take control of its own security. No longer can we depend on external forces to safeguard our borders,” Holness stated.

The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) has been tasked with implementing the full rollout of cargo imaging technology through strategic public-private partnerships. These high-tech scanners aim to increase detection rates and disrupt illegal gun trafficking, a persistent issue fueling crime and violence across the island.

Beyond the Ports: Expanding National Surveillance

The security overhaul extends beyond ports, with the government planning to bolster aerial and maritime patrols. A new maritime patrol aircraft and additional offshore patrol vessels will be acquired to enhance surveillance of Jamaica’s territorial waters.

Holness highlighted the need for a robust integrity system to monitor port personnel and ensure that scanning procedures are conducted with full transparency.

“For too long, gaps in port security have allowed illegal weapons to slip through. This initiative is about closing those gaps, increasing oversight, and holding those responsible accountable,” the Prime Minister declared.

With the government now moving to take full ownership of its border security, the initiative marks a turning point in Jamaica’s fight against illegal arms trafficking.
