ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – Unicomer Jamaica announced the temporary closure of its Lucky Dollar and Courts Bargain Centre stores in Spanish Town after violent protests and a fire in the area. The incidents followed the fatal shooting of prominent alleged gang leader Othneil Lobban, known as ‘Thickman,’ which has heightened tensions in the old capital.
The fire at the Courts Bargain Centre, located on Young Street, resulted in significant damage to the building. However, Unicomer Jamaica expressed relief that no staff members were injured. Managing Director Errol Le Blanc emphasized that the safety of employees and customers remains the company’s highest priority. “While we can replace our products, we cannot replace our people,” Le Blanc stated.
Dianne Dunston, the head of sales for Unicomer Jamaica, reassured customers that the company is working closely with local law enforcement to assess when it will be safe to reopen the Lucky Dollar store. “We are in constant communication with the police and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” Dunston commented.
Despite the closures on Young Street, the Courts Bargain Centre on Kings Street, Kingston, is still operating. Additionally, the Courts Spanish Town Oasis location remains open, with management collaborating with authorities to ensure staff and customer safety.
Unicomer Jamaica will provide further updates on the reopening of the Lucky Dollar store as the situation in Spanish Town evolves.
