PARADISE, Westmoreland — Grieving family members and friends of 20-year-old Jimoy Suckoo, a bartender from Paradise, Westmoreland, are calling for a transparent and thorough investigation into her untimely death in a Clarendon hotel room.
The incident occurred at Hotel Versalles in May Pen, where Suckoo sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Her boyfriend, a 28-year-old police constable, claims the shooting was accidental. However, conflicting accounts of what transpired have left her loved ones with more questions than answers.
According to police reports, the constable initially stated that he had placed his Glock service pistol on the bed where Suckoo was lying. He claimed to have heard a loud explosion after turning his back, only to discover that Suckoo had been shot in the chest. Later, the officer provided a different account, stating that he accidentally discharged the weapon while attempting to catch it after it slipped from his hand.
The inconsistencies in the constable’s statements have fueled doubts among Suckoo’s relatives, particularly her mother, Nadine Suckoo. Speaking to reporters, Nadine revealed that she observed a gunshot wound on her daughter’s face, contrary to the police’s initial report of a chest wound.
“This doesn’t add up,” said Nadine. “I want the truth. My daughter didn’t deserve to die this way.”
Jimoy, affectionately known as “Janay” or “Nay,” was remembered by her godmother, Joan Barnes, as a vibrant and kind-hearted young woman. “Everyone loved her. She was hardworking and had big plans for her future. This is devastating,” Barnes shared tearfully.
The family has also raised concerns about unconfirmed claims from a neighbor, who alleged that there was a heated phone argument between Suckoo and her boyfriend the day before the tragedy.
In addition to the conflicting statements, another point of contention is the whereabouts of one of Suckoo’s two iPhones. Her mother insists that the phone remains active on social media but has not been handed over to the authorities.
“We need that phone. It could hold answers we’re looking for,” Nadine demanded.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) has launched an inquiry into the shooting. Their team has processed the scene, collected evidence, and swabbed both the constable and Suckoo’s hands for gunshot residue. The constable has been issued a Section 21 notice to submit a statement and undergo further questioning.
As the investigation unfolds, Suckoo’s family continues to wait for clarity, seeking justice and answers about how a young woman with dreams and a bright future met such a tragic end.
