KINGSTON, Jamaica— Rising Jamaican sprint star Alana Reid, the reigning World Under-20 women’s 100m champion, has transitioned to a new training camp at the University of Arkansas, aligning with the renowned Hurdles Mechanics group. The move marks a pivotal step in Reid’s blossoming athletic career, sources have revealed.
Reid captured global attention with her stunning performances at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, where she earned two gold medals, including a standout victory in the 100m. Previously training at Florida’s Star Athletics under the tutelage of coach Dennis Mitchell, she honed her craft alongside elite sprinters such as American World Champion Sha’Carri Richardson.
Under the guidance of coach Lawrence “Boogie” Johnson at Hurdles Mechanics, Reid joins forces with fellow Jamaican Olympians Ackera Nugent and Nickisha Pryce. This new environment promises to further refine her exceptional talent as she gears up for future competitions.
After an illustrious high school career at Hydel High, Reid signed a professional contract, opting out of a scholarship opportunity at the University of Oregon. Her professional debut included a role in Jamaica’s relay squad at the Paris Olympic Games in August, cementing her position as one of the nation’s most promising young athletes.
Reid’s national junior record of 10.92 seconds in the 100m, set at the 2023 ISSA Champs, remains a testament to her prodigious speed and determination. With her new training setup at the University of Arkansas, Reid is poised to reach even greater heights on the global stage.
