Dr. Keith Rowley Announces Intent to Retire from Political Life

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago — In a pivotal announcement on Friday, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago revealed his decision to retire from public office before the conclusion of his current term, set to end by August. The declaration marks the end of a remarkable 45-year career in politics for the 75-year-old leader.

Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Rowley reflected on his extensive tenure in public service, during which he served as a Member of Parliament for Diego Martin West since 1991. “Forty-five years is a significant journey,” he remarked, adding that he had long contemplated stepping away from politics at this milestone.

Dr. Rowley expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his political journey. “I hope that somewhere along the way, I have made a positive impact on this nation. For that, I extend my deepest thanks to all who believed in me and worked alongside me.”

Although stepping down from his seat in Parliament, Dr. Rowley assured citizens and party members that he would continue to lead the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) as they gear up for the upcoming general elections. “I will ensure a smooth transition and remain committed to my responsibilities as the political leader of the PNM,” he stated.

In his closing remarks, the prime minister underscored his desire to spend more time with his family, saying, “Before the end of this term’s legal limits, I will resign from office and dedicate myself to the next chapter of my life with my loved ones.”

Dr. Rowley’s announcement ushers in a significant moment for the nation as it prepares to transition leadership while navigating pressing economic and social challenges. His departure will leave a lasting legacy, both as a politician and as a steadfast leader during critical periods in Trinidad and Tobago’s history.
