GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands – A somber mood blankets the Cayman Islands after a devastating single-vehicle accident early Thursday morning claimed the life of a Jamaican man and left three others hospitalized with critical injuries.
The deceased, 26-year-old Romario Jacquet from Rockfort, East Kingston, was behind the wheel of a Subaru sedan that veered off course in a tragic incident that occurred just hours after another major collision on the island. Police Commissioner Kurt Walton expressed his condolences, stating, “Instead of celebrating the festive season, a family is now mourning an unimaginable loss.”
The crash adds to an alarming pattern of road fatalities in the Cayman Islands. With this incident, the 2024 road death toll rises to 13, three of which have occurred in December alone—a grim reminder of the perils on the road during the holiday season.
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue, local authorities are urging drivers to exercise heightened caution during the remaining weeks of the year. Meanwhile, the community mourns yet another life cut tragically short, while three other individuals fight for recovery in local hospitals.
This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for road safety awareness and measures to prevent further heartbreak on Cayman’s roads.
