Sangster International Airport Embarks on Next Phase of Modernization with Biometric Integration and Infrastructure Upgrades

MONTEGO BAY, St. James — Sangster International Airport (SIA), Jamaica’s gateway to millions of travelers annually, is set to undergo transformative changes with the planned introduction of biometric technology for departing passengers in 2025. This initiative forms part of MBJ Airports Ltd’s broader strategy to enhance efficiency, reduce wait times, and improve the overall travel experience.

Biometric Rollout for Departures

Shane Munroe, CEO of MBJ Airports Ltd, highlighted the airport’s focus on leveraging technology to streamline passenger processing. “The goal is to create a seamless, efficient journey for travelers. Biometrics will be introduced at self-service kiosks, allowing passengers to enroll using their mobile devices, and integrated at e-gates for security and boarding,” said Munroe during the annual MBJ airport forum.

The move comes after the successful implementation of biometric systems for arriving passengers, introduced as a response to the increased need for contactless solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve seen the benefits on arrivals and aim to replicate these gains for departures,” Munroe added. The technology is designed to minimize time spent in queues, a key performance metric for the busy airport.

Revolutionizing Baggage Handling

In tandem with biometric enhancements, SIA is piloting self-service baggage drop stations in collaboration with key airline partners. These dedicated machines will allow passengers to check in luggage independently, bypassing traditional counters. For those who prefer a conventional check-in experience, the airport has expanded its counter space by 20 percent, ensuring faster processing.

Infrastructure Overhaul to Reduce Congestion

As part of a US$200-million modernization effort launched in 2022, significant infrastructure upgrades are underway to manage the airport’s growing traffic efficiently:

  • Air/Sea Lounge for Cruise Passengers: A purpose-built facility will now process cruise ship passengers, alleviating congestion in the arrivals area, particularly during the busy winter season. The facility offers streamlined immigration and customs clearance, with direct transfers to Montego Bay’s cruise ship pier.
  • New Access Road: A dedicated road connecting Godfrey Dyer Boulevard to the airport will ease traffic flow by reducing dependency on the main roundabout. The project is scheduled for completion in 2025.
  • Relocation of Key Services: The airport plans to relocate car rental agencies and Knutsford Express operations to more convenient areas. Fully automated car parks are also being introduced to improve vehicle management.

Return of a Gas Station and Other Amenities

Munroe also announced the reintroduction of a gas station, relocated to accommodate ongoing developments. This addition, along with the various enhancements, underscores SIA’s commitment to elevating convenience for travelers and stakeholders alike.

Looking Ahead

With these ambitious projects, Sangster International Airport is positioning itself as a leader in innovation and traveler experience in the Caribbean. By integrating cutting-edge technology and modern infrastructure, MBJ Airports Ltd aims to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving travel landscape while solidifying SIA’s reputation as a premier hub for global travelers.

As these upgrades continue to unfold, passengers can look forward to a smoother, more efficient journey through Jamaica’s busiest airport.
