KINGSTON, Jamaica – As the festive season approaches, the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) is reminding the public to stay vigilant when hanging up their twinkling lights and other holiday decorations. With the holidays come many fun activities, but it is also a time to ensure that fire prevention is top of mind.
Deputy Commissioner of Fire Safety, Prevention, and Investigation at the JFB, Sean Martin, advises that a thorough inspection of wiring is crucial prior to stringing up lights. According to Martin, “If you find any part of the wiring has worn insulation, we strongly recommend that you discard it rather than attempting to fix it with tape. The same applies to plugs – if they’re cracked or broken, replace the entire set.”
He also points out that overloading electrical circuits is a common mistake that can lead to fires. “When you chain too many lights together, you risk placing an excessive load on the circuit. If a breaker fails to trip under that strain, a fire can start,” Martin explained. “Choosing a suitable extension cord is equally important; cheaper, lower-quality options can overheat quickly, increasing the risk of an electrical fire.”
For added peace of mind, Martin encourages consumers to look for reliable, safety-tested products. “Only use lights and extension cords that are clearly marked with a recognized certification, such as the ‘UL’ (Underwriters Laboratory) label,” he said. He also cautions everyone to avoid using indoor-only lights outdoors, since they lack the waterproofing necessary to withstand the elements.
With these guidelines in mind, residents can safely enjoy the sparkle of the season—and keep their homes and loved ones protected from potential hazards.
