The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has announced a severe weather warning effective until Monday, November 4, 2024, at 5 PM, as a weather system threatens the island.
In a statement released on Saturday, meteorologists reported that a significant area of disturbed weather is developing over the southwestern Caribbean, positioned just north of Panama. This low-pressure system is anticipated to progress northward and then veer northwestward in the next 24 to 36 hours.
Forecasters indicate a high likelihood of this system intensifying into a tropical cyclone. Current predictions suggest that by Monday morning, Jamaica may face the onset of a tropical depression or storm, with its path likely taking it east and then north of the island by Tuesday.
The Met Office warns that, irrespective of the system’s development stage, unstable weather conditions will begin impacting Jamaica from Sunday night and continue through Wednesday evening. The forecast includes cloudy skies, intermittent showers, and thunderstorms, potentially heavy in some areas, accompanied by strong gusty winds affecting numerous parishes, particularly in the eastern and south-central regions.
In light of these developments, fishers operating on cays and banks are urged to prepare for potential evacuations and to stay vigilant.
The Meteorological Service of Jamaica will maintain close observation of the situation and provide updates as necessary.
