Montevideo Bus Crash: A Morning of Chaos on the Beach

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AFP) — In a shocking turn of events Saturday morning, a public transit bus veered off course and crashed onto the sandy shores of Pocitos beach, injuring at least 15 individuals, with six requiring serious medical attention, as reported by local authorities.

The incident occurred in the affluent Pocitos neighborhood, where the Trouville Prefecture, responsible for coastal security, confirmed the bus plowed through a protective barrier on the coastal promenade before coming to a halt at the water’s edge.

As investigations are ongoing, preliminary assessments suggest that a possible brake failure could have led to this alarming accident. “We’re looking into the mechanics of the bus and the driver’s actions leading up to the crash,” stated Alejandro Perez, spokesperson for the National Navy, during a press briefing.

Witnesses reported a scene of chaos as the bus struck beachgoers enjoying their morning. The bus driver was ejected from the vehicle through the windshield, sustaining severe injuries in the process.

Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, assisting the injured and transporting those in critical condition to local hospitals. Of the 15 injured, six have been classified as seriously hurt, while the remaining nine sustained minor injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, which has left the community in shock and raised concerns about the safety of public transportation in the area.
