PNP’s Mark Golding Vows to Revitalize Jamaica’s Ganja Industry Amidst Government Criticism

ST JAMES, Jamaica—In a bold assertion, Mark Golding, President of the People’s National Party (PNP), has charged the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) government with stifling the legal ganja industry through misguided policies. Golding has pledged that a PNP-led government would prioritize the revitalization of this vital sector, aiming to restore its potential for economic growth and community empowerment.

Golding highlighted the landmark 2015 amendments to the Dangerous Drugs Act, which decriminalized the personal use of ganja, acknowledged Rastafari rights, and laid the foundation for a burgeoning medical cannabis market. Despite these advances, he contended that the current administration has failed to support small farmers and has hindered the industry’s progress.

“The present state of the lawful ganja industry is unacceptable. The Jamaica Labour Party’s mismanagement has not only devastated the industry but has also stripped opportunities from our small farmers who deserve better,” Golding remarked during the opening of the PNP’s new constituency office in Montego Bay.

He emphasized the need for a comprehensive restructuring of the ganja sector, stating, “Our goal is to rebuild this industry into a robust engine for economic prosperity. We recognize the international market’s potential and want to ensure our farmers can capitalize on it.”

Golding’s comments come as Janice Allen, an Opposition senator, gears up to challenge JLP incumbent Heroy Clarke for the St James Central seat in the upcoming general elections. Clarke has represented the constituency since 2016, and Allen’s campaign will focus on addressing the concerns of local constituents, particularly regarding agricultural policies and economic development.

With calls for reform ringing across the island, Golding’s commitment to rejuvenating the ganja industry may resonate strongly with voters seeking new opportunities in Jamaica’s evolving economic landscape.
