KINGSTON, Jamaica — Hope Gardens in St. Andrew was filled with laughter and excitement as the Flow Foundation hosted its annual Children’s Day on September 28, designed specifically for pediatric cancer patients from the Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC). The event brought together families and young patients, creating a vibrant atmosphere of joy and connection amidst their challenging journeys.
The day featured a variety of activities, from face painting to games, allowing the children to step away from their medical struggles and immerse themselves in pure fun.
“We organize this event not just to address the medical needs of these children but to nurture their overall development and emotional wellbeing,” explained LeVaughn Flynn, public relations manager at Flow and a director of the Flow Foundation. “We believe in the power of community and support in fostering resilience.”
Dr. Sharon McLean-Salmon, a pediatric haematologist/oncologist at BHC, highlighted the transformative impact of such events on the children and their families.
“Today is a powerful reminder that these children are not defined by their illness. They are filled with potential and strength. Experiences like this allow them to embrace their childhood and find joy amidst their battles,” Dr. McLean-Salmon stated.
Parents echoed these sentiments, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity their children had to play and enjoy a day free from the usual hospital routines.
“It’s truly a blessing to see the children smiling and enjoying themselves,” shared Gillian Jameson, whose daughter is currently undergoing treatment. “We are incredibly grateful to the Flow Foundation and the hospital for this beautiful day. It means so much to us.”
This annual gathering reinforces the Flow Foundation’s commitment to uplifting communities and supporting initiatives that promote healing and joy for families facing pediatric cancer.
With over 300,000 children diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year, the challenges faced by these young patients are immense, making events like this a vital source of hope and happiness in their lives.
