Jamaica Strengthens Ties with India Through New High Commission

NEW DELHI, India (CMC) – In a significant move to bolster diplomatic relations, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has inaugurated Jamaica’s High Commission in New Delhi, marking a pivotal step in enhancing Jamaica’s presence in India.

“This is a milestone for Jamaica as we establish our High Commission in New Delhi,” Holness stated during the opening ceremony, emphasizing the goal of fostering a deeper relationship between the two nations. “While we have made strides in connectivity, the potential for growth is vast. By enhancing direct ties, especially in tourism, we can unlock new opportunities for economic development, cultural exchange, and strengthen the bond between the people of Jamaica and India.”

During his four-day official visit to India, Holness expressed optimism about the future benefits of this partnership, stating, “I anticipate that our friendship will flourish even more in the coming years.”

Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Kamina Johnson Smith underscored the significance of the High Commission in solidifying Jamaica-India relations. She praised Ambassador Jason Hall, Jamaica’s High Commissioner to India, for his outstanding efforts in showcasing Jamaica’s rich heritage through captivating visuals adorning the High Commission’s walls.

A special moment during the ceremony was the attendance of former West Indies cricket star Chris Gayle. His deep affection for Jamaica, combined with his widespread popularity in India, added an unforgettable touch to the event. The High Commission proudly displayed one of Gayle’s iconic cricket shots, symbolizing his patriotism and significant contributions to the sport.

“Cricket has long served as a bridge between Jamaica and India, enhancing our connection through a mutual passion for the game and its legendary athletes. The long-anticipated opening ceremony, which faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has finally come to fruition,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade shared on its official Facebook page.

The establishment of the High Commission is poised to pave the way for more robust collaborations in various sectors, further enriching the historical ties between the Caribbean nation and South Asia’s largest country.
