Support for Prime Minister Andrew Holness Stands Strong Amid Criticism

KINGSTON, Jamaica — During the opening of the 2024/25 State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Robert Miller, Member of Parliament for St Catherine South Eastern, delivered a passionate defense of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, highlighting their long-standing friendship. This support comes in the wake of recent scrutiny faced by Holness following revelations from the Integrity Commission regarding an investigation into potential illicit enrichment.

Miller dedicated much of his address to rebuffing the criticism directed at Holness, whom he regards as a victim of envy and classism within Jamaican society. “There are elements in our society, including some connected to the Opposition, who cannot accept that a man who rose from humble beginnings to hold one of the nation’s highest offices has served Jamaica with unwavering dedication,” he stated.

The MP emphasized that Holness’s ascent from a modest upbringing in Spanish Town to the Prime Minister’s office exemplifies the spirit of resilience and hard work. Miller noted, “I have seen firsthand the challenges Andrew faced and the tireless commitment he has shown to lift himself and others out of poverty. This is why I take such personal offense when unfounded attacks are made against him.”

Miller recounted their shared history, having attended the same primary school and church, reinforcing his intimate understanding of Holness’s character and ambitions. “From our early days playing in the schoolyard to discussing our dreams for the future, it has always been clear that Andrew was determined to make a difference in our country,” he remarked.

The MP praised Holness for his dedication to transforming Jamaica into a first-class nation, expressing pride in the Prime Minister’s achievements and vision. “He has tirelessly worked to elevate Jamaicans from poverty to prosperity, and I can confidently say he has delivered on that promise,” Miller asserted.

Miller’s unwavering confidence in Holness’s integrity and leadership is evident as he argued that attempts to undermine the Prime Minister’s reputation will ultimately fail. “Holness is a self-made man who has demonstrated integrity in both his business ventures and political career,” he added, highlighting the positive changes witnessed in Jamaica under Holness’s leadership.

Citing significant accomplishments such as record low unemployment rates, reductions in poverty, tax relief, and increased support for educational and health initiatives, Miller lauded the Prime Minister’s efforts. He also made a case for the continuation of Holness’s leadership and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), urging Jamaicans to recognize these positive developments.

As he concluded, Miller called on the electorate to prioritize continuity and stability in leadership, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a government that has proven capable of steering the nation toward progress. “Let us remember the strides we’ve made under Prime Minister Holness and ensure that we continue on this path when the time comes,” he stated firmly.
