Desert of Malibu Withdraws from Gold Cup: Funcaandun and Is That A Fact Gear Up for a Two-Horse Race

In a stunning development, Desert of Malibu, the highly touted American-bred chestnut mare, has been scratched from today’s 51st edition of the $2.5-million Philip Feanny Gold Cup. The five-year-old star suffered a scorpion sting, preventing her from participating in the highly anticipated Graded Stakes/Open Allowance event, which spans seven furlongs (1,400m).

Desert of Malibu’s absence paves the way for the remaining contenders, Funcaandun and Is That A Fact, to vie for the coveted Gold Cup title. With eight victories from ten starts, the mare was aiming for her fourth consecutive win and fifth overall this season, making her withdrawal a significant upset for fans eager to see her perform.

The Gold Cup, regarded as the pinnacle of local handicap races for horses aged three and up, will take place as the ninth and final race on the card, scheduled for 5:20 pm, with the first race starting at noon.

With Desert of Malibu out of the picture, trainer Jason DaCosta’s formidable duo, Funcaandun and Is That A Fact, emerges as the prime challengers. Both American-bred competitors have strong pedigrees that align with the race’s rigorous conditions.

Funcaandun, known for his explosive speed and agility, is poised to capitalize on any vulnerabilities left by the absent favorite. The contender recently claimed victory in the Distinctly Irish Trophy (nine furlongs and 25 yards, or 1,820m), triumphing by two lengths on August 24. Under the guidance of jockey Robert Halledeen, Funcaandun has returned from that win in peak condition, ready to seize the moment.

On the other hand, Is That A Fact, while often flying under the radar, possesses a powerful blend of strength and endurance. His DaCosta training should not be underestimated, especially in light of Desert of Malibu’s exit from the race. With a recent workout of 1:12.3 for six furlongs on September 29, Is That A Fact is more than capable of making his mark, and jockey Tevin Foster will aim to steer him to victory.

Adding another layer of excitement to the day’s events is the fierce jockey championship race between Foster and his rival, Roman. Both riders are locked in a neck-and-neck competition, each having secured 99 wins as they approach the finish line of the season. Their rivalry has reached a boiling point, creating palpable tension as they vie for the championship title.

With both jockeys tied and competing in a nine-race card, the stakes are higher than ever. The anticipation for this showdown is building, as every ride will count towards reaching the coveted 100-win milestone. Will Foster’s quick reflexes give him the edge, or will Roman’s strategic prowess prevail? The racing community is on edge, eagerly awaiting the outcome of this ultimate championship battle.
