TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands (CMC) – Deputy Premier Lorna Smith has voiced her strong opposition to reports that the government of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) may hire popular Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel for a performance later this year.
During a recent local radio interview, Smith made her position clear, stating, “I do not support it, and I have no problem in saying so.” She expressed her concern that the idea of hosting the artist should be addressed swiftly, emphasizing the need for the government to prioritize more pressing issues at this time.
“This matter needs to be nipped in the bud in terms of government support,” Smith added, indicating that now is not the right time for such an engagement.
The Deputy Premier’s comments come amid unverified reports suggesting that Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley may be backing the event featuring Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer.
Vybz Kartel, who was released from prison earlier this year after serving 13 years due to the overturning of his murder conviction by the UK Privy Council, has generated significant discussion. The Jamaican Court of Appeal did not mandate a new trial upon his release.
As anticipation builds for his first performance, scheduled for December 31 in Jamaica, the idea of a concert in the BVI has sparked a heated debate. Smith’s remarks highlight a divide over the appropriateness of engaging with controversial figures in the entertainment industry, especially in light of the local government’s pressing responsibilities.
