KINGSTON, Jamaica — A 33-year-old businessman has been charged with larceny by trick and fraudulent conversion after allegedly deceiving a woman, who is reportedly pregnant with his child, out of thousands of dollars.
The accused, Charles Brown, resides on Hopewell Road in Waterford, St. Catherine. According to reports from the May Pen police, Brown had entered into an agreement with the expectant mother to assist her in finding a location for her business. He was entrusted with managing the monthly rent payments, which were set at $50,000.
Between March and September, the woman transferred a total of approximately $450,000 into Brown’s account to cover these payments, in addition to contributing funds for labor and renovation costs for the business. However, as preparations for the business opening progressed, Brown reportedly made the decision to take control of the venture and instructed his pregnant partner to vacate the premises.
Investigations revealed that the actual rent was only $40,000 per month, raising suspicions about Brown’s handling of the funds. The woman subsequently filed a report with the police on Sunday, September 22. The following day, Brown surrendered to authorities and was formally charged with the alleged offences.
The case highlights concerns over financial trust and deceit in personal relationships, particularly in vulnerable situations such as pregnancy. Brown’s actions have led to significant legal repercussions as the investigation continues.
