2024 Homeless World Cup Kicks Off in Seoul, Pioneering Event for Asia

The 2024 Homeless World Cup has officially launched in Seoul, South Korea, marking a historic moment as it is the first time this global tournament has been held in Asia. Since its inception in 2003, the Homeless World Cup has aimed to empower individuals experiencing homelessness by using football as a catalyst for positive change and to challenge societal perceptions of homelessness.

This year’s tournament features an impressive lineup of 52 teams from 38 countries, showcasing the diverse and vibrant spirit of the global community. Matches are being held at the main pitch of Hanyang University, where the excitement of the event will unfold until September 28.

The 2024 edition of the tournament is particularly significant, as it is the first since FIFA entered into a partnership with the Homeless World Cup Foundation in August. This collaboration underscores the belief that football can be a powerful force for good. FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “FIFA is excited to contribute because we share the view of the Homeless World Cup Foundation that football is a force for good.”

As part of the agreement, FIFA is providing medals and trophies for participants, and the matches will be broadcast on its streaming platform, FIFA+. This added visibility aims to further elevate the event’s mission.

Local organizers, including The Big Issue Korea, are focused on raising awareness about housing rights among Seoul’s residents. Executive Director Ahn Byung-hun emphasized the importance of the tournament in advocating for better policies related to homelessness in South Korea, particularly highlighting the need for mandatory support measures.

The South Korean team, composed of eight players from various backgrounds—including individuals with disabilities, an asylum seeker, and a teenager living in a shelter—exemplifies the inclusive spirit of the event.

The Homeless World Cup is open to the public free of charge, inviting everyone to witness the power of football in uniting communities and inspiring change. Join the movement and celebrate the resilience and talent of players from around the world as they take to the pitch!
